The Blue Hour – Bridgewater Bay, Blairgowrie

Pictured below, a pre-dawn long exposure shot from Bridgewater Bay in Blairgowrie on the Mornington Peninsula.

Bridgewater Bay is accessible via a short walk from the carpark at the southern end of St Johns Wood Rd.   Beach access is via a set of stairs.  The best time to visit is at or near low tide when the rock platforms are exposed.  Navigating the beach at high tide is problematic.

Tech stuff – 30 secs @ f/11

Carpets of Green – Bay of Islands, Sorrento

October is a wonderful time on the back beaches of the Mornington Peninsula.  The rock platforms are transformed by a thriving carpet of lush greenery that’s only visible near low tide.  The photos below were taken at the Bay of Islands, Sorrento, but similar sights can be found all along the Mornington Peninsula back beaches at this time of year.

To get to the Bay of Islands park at the end of Diamond Bay Road.  The walking track to the observation point is short and well signposted.  Jump the fence and climb down the well worn path to reach the beach.  🙂

Pre-dawn at Koonya beach

A pre-dawn long exposure image from Koonya beach at Blairgowrie on the Mornington Peninsula.       The colour image was annoyingly way too blue and had a couple of mini star trails which were simply a distraction and had to go.  🙂

Koonya beach is located at the back beach end of Hughes Rd in Blairgowrie.

Sunrise at Number 16 beach – The Dragon’s Head

Here’s some images from a recent sunrise excursion to Number 16 beach at Rye on the Mornington Peninsula. The beach car park is located at the intersection of Tasman Drive and Marcia Ave in Rye.  The best time to visit is near low tide when the rock platforms are exposed and the Dragon’s Head becomes accessible.   Prepare to get your feet wet.  🙂

The Things We Do For Love (of seascape photography) – Tea Tree Creek

Most photographers with a passion for seascape photography will admit that putting themselves out there close to the edge of a violent ocean provides them with a certain personal thrill and sense of exhilaration, ….and of course this keeps us coming back for more.  🙂

Pictured below, a couple of images from a recent trip to Tea Tree Creek beach near Flinders on the Mornington Peninsula.  My friend Jason positioned nice ‘n close to the action.

Bushrangers Bay – The Boiling Ocean

Following are some images from an excursion to the wild coastline at Bushrangers Bay on the Mornington Peninsula.
I highly recommend the 3km hike from the carpark at Cape Schanck lighthouse to Bushrangers Bay. The scenic track follows the coastline along clifftops and through bush.
The best time to visit Bushrangers Bay is at low tide which allows access to the rugged rock formations.

Sunrise at Cape Schanck

This was certainly one of the more memorable excursions that my photo group has undertaken, …and in a bad way.
The rock selves at the end of Cape Schanck are hazardous at the best of times. On this particular visit two of our group members were caught off guard and knocked into water by an unexpectedly large wave.

Thankfully both guys are OK and came away from the experience with minor injuries. It could have been a lot worse.

Fowlers beach – Blairgowrie

Below are some images from this weekend’s excursion to Fowlers beach in Blairgowrie.
If you’d like to visit Fowlers beach the closest carpark is at the end of St Johns Wood Rd in Blairgowrie. Follow the track from the carpark area to the beach then turn right and follow the path for about two hundred metres. Where the wire fence ends walk down towards the edge of the cliff and you’ll see a “goat track” down the steep embankment to the beach. I would describe this as a medium difficulty access point, …not everyone will be comfortable with negotiating the sandy steep descent down to the beach.

Montforts beach and the Bunny Rock

After the recent group excursion to Montforts beach I decided to revisit the place at high tide. The aim was to catch the three feature rock formations and also the “Bunny Rock” with a bit more water around their bases.
If you’re interested in visiting these fine rock formations park your car at the end of Spraypoint Road in Blairgowrie and take the short walk to the beach.

Below is a series of long exposure images taken during a photography group excursion to the Bay of Islands at Sorrento. Conditions were ideal for those of us wanting to take long exposures.
